1. Getting Started

  1. Sign in to The Hub with your Florida Tech account.
  2. You start on the Home page. If you teach, the top of the page shows these instructor tabs:
Tab What it's for
Home Your daily overview: teaching summary, Canvas, notices, shortcuts
Students Accommodations Academic accommodations for students in your classes
Testing Appointments Testing Center requests to review, plus upcoming and past tests
Courses Rosters Your classes, with grades, Canvas activity, and email tools
Students Notices Verified absences and health notices for your students

Tip: Click the Refresh button on any tab to load the latest data.

2. The Home Tab

The Teaching card gives you a quick summary:

  • Progress reports to complete: Shown when an advisor or Student Success has asked for a progress report on one of your students. Click it to open the report. Each request stays open for 14 days.
  • Testing Center: Counts of testing requests that need your review, upcoming tests, and tests ready for pick-up. Click a count to jump to that list.
  • May miss class this week: Students with a verified absence or health notice that overlaps your class meetings this week. Click a name to open Students Notices.
  • Rosters: Opens the Courses Rosters tab.

The Canvas card shows your assignments and grading activity. Click Open to go to Canvas.

3. Choosing a Term

The Students Accommodations, Courses Rosters, and Students Notices tabs share a term picker at the top:

  • This term shows only the current term.
  • Click a term chip to add or remove it. You can view several terms at once.
  • Use the Search box to find a student by name or ID.

4. Courses Rosters

Your sections are listed by term and grouped by course. Co-taught sections list every instructor, and the primary instructor is marked.

For each student you'll see:

  • Midterm and final grades (these can lag behind PAWS)
  • Canvas score
  • Missing submissions, highlighted in red
  • Last Canvas access. If a student hasn't logged in for 7 days or more, it is flagged.

Emailing students

  • One student: Open the ⋮ menu on their row and choose Email.
  • A whole class: Click Email class on the section header.
  • All sections of a course: Click Email course on the course header.
  • A custom group: Tick the checkboxes next to students, sections, or courses. Then click Email in the bar at the bottom of the page. A student who is in more than one of your selected sections receives only one email.

Sending an Academic Alert

If a student is struggling, open the ⋮ menu on their row and choose Academic Alert (available for current terms only). Fill in:

  • Current grade, Attendance, Academic concerns, and Recommendations (all required)
  • Comments visible to the student (optional)
  • Private comments, visible to staff and faculty only (optional)

Click Send alert. The student, their advisor, and Student Success are notified.

5. Students Accommodations

This tab lists every student in your sections who has academic accommodations approved by the Office of Accessibility Resources (OAR). Students are grouped by term and section.

  • Each student card lists their accommodations by category, plus any notes.
  • Click the ✉️ icon to email a student.

Please keep accommodations confidential. Don't discuss them in front of other students. Testing accommodations can be scheduled with the Testing Center. Send any questions to Accessibility Resources.

6. Testing Appointments

Students can ask to take a test at the Testing Center, for example to use an accommodation or to make up a missed test. You review these requests here.

The tiles at the top show a count for each list. Click a tile to open that list:

Tile Meaning
Needs review New requests waiting for your decision
Upcoming Approved tests that haven't happened yet
Ready for pick-up Completed paper tests waiting for you to collect
Past tests Tests already taken
Declined Requests you declined

Reviewing a request

Each request card shows the student, course, test type, requested date and time, and reason. It may also show:

  • OAR accommodations: Hover over the chip to see the list.
  • Verified notices: Click the chip to see the student's verified absences and health notices. Use these to check a make-up request against the dates the student was out.

To approve, click Review & Approve and confirm:

  • Test Type, Test Date, Start Time, and End Time
  • Allowed Items, plus any additional allowed items
  • Notes for the testing center (optional; the student doesn't see these)

Then click Approve.

To decline, click Decline, enter a reason (the student will see it), and click Submit.

Guidelines: Students should request testing at least 48 hours in advance (not counting weekends) and talk to you before requesting. As instructor of record, you may decline a request if either of these wasn't done.

Test formats

  • Paper Test: Drop off the paper test at the Testing Center before the test date. When the student is done, it appears under Ready for pick-up.
  • Online Test: Nothing to drop off.
  • Hybrid Test: Part paper, part computer. Follow the paper drop-off steps for the paper part.

7. Students Notices

This tab shows Verified Absences and Health Notices for students in your sections.

  • Use the filter chips (All, Verified Absences, Health Notices) to narrow the list.
  • Each notice shows the student, reason, dates, and which of your class meetings fall during the absence.
  • Click the ✉️ icon to email the student.

A verified absence does not mean you must excuse the absence. You decide that under your course's attendance policy. Only students with a verified absence or health notice may retake missed tests or quizzes proctored by the Student Success and Support Center.

8. Academic Progress Manager

Open it from the Progress reports link on the Home tab, or go to Students → Academic Progress Manager in the side menu if you see it there.

Tab What it's for
New alert Your current students, with midterm grades, missing work, and Canvas activity, plus a shortcut to send an alert
Sent Alerts you (and colleagues teaching your courses) sent this semester
Received Your advisees who received an academic alert this semester
Reports Progress reports are requested for your courses. Fill them in here.

9. Quick Answers

I don't see the instructor tabs. They appear only for accounts listed as instructors of record. If you are teaching this term and don't see them, contact The Hub support.

A grade looks out of date. Grades in The Hub can lag behind PAWS. The roster shows the date the Canvas data was last updated.

A student says they have an accommodation, but they're not listed. Only accommodations approved by OAR appear here. Refer the student to Accessibility Resources.

I need to change an approved test. In Testing Appointments → Upcoming, click the ✏️ Edit icon on the test, where it's available. Otherwise, contact the Testing Center.
